Janet Squires

Janet Squires is a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI) and Women Writing the West (WWW). The Gingerbread Cowboy was declared the Arizona Governor's 2007 First Grade Book and a special edition of 100,000 copies was printed for distribution in every first grade student in the state! Ms. Squires has co-chaired Young Authors Conferences, taught writing workshops for children, provides in-service training seminars for teachers, directed a student-run newspaper, and lectured on childen's books and the creative process for children and adults.

Session I: The Life of an Author (Primary)
This is an interactive program that incorporates how the "Six traits plus one" are used in her writing and the ways the "Traits of a scholar" work in her life as an author. The workshop includes:
  • What it's like to be an author: turning ideas into stories,
  • Words and Pictures: how a book is made,
  • Questions and Answers
Session II: Creating Writers: An Author's Perspective (High School, Adult)
This presentation will provide participants with a deeper understanding of the creative process in writing--finding and developing an idea, revisiting your work, and the importance of word choice.
The workshop includes:
  • How The Gingerbread Cowboy was shaped through author's choices
  • "Thinking like a Writer" an interactive experience in creativity
